High frequency words are the words that occur most frequently in reading material. In 1936 Edward Dolch developed lists of what he found were the 220 most frequently used words in children's books. These words are said to make up 50% – 70% of most reading material. These lists are still widely used and are no longer copyright. Some of the words can be sounded out using phonic rules, but most of them are not phonically-based and just have to be known and recognised by beginner readers. We will be using these words for basic high frequency vocabulary week by week. We will be revising Lists 1 - 3 (10 per week) and learning List 4 (5 per week) in Grade 2.
